Stories, Legends and Some Oregon History
by Carmelita M. Holland

Over 250 pages of photographs, charts, maps, colored photos and text, this hard cover book gloriously tells the story of the Northeastern corner of Oregon. From the Indian Wars through the gold mining years to the start of World War Two, and the cessation of commercial gold mining activity, author Carmelita Holland sets out the history of this beautiful country.

The Snake River country, the Imnaha, Eagle Cap Wilderness, Chief Joseph and his Nez Perce tribe--all storied names--all discussed in a most readable manner. The gold mines of Cornucopia: the Last Chance, the Queen of the West, the Red Jacket, the Whitman and the Union Companion to name but a few, where the ore was mined. The tramways, some of them among the longest and highest ever built in the world, were built to transport ore to the mills and supplies back to the mines, high up on the slopes. Finally, the mills, including the Baker, the Hoke, the Mayflower, the Union and the Queen of the West, where ore was concentrated before shipping to smelters and mint. All are described in detail, with literally hundreds of photos, copies of location notices, and pay vouchers for some of the miners who worked in this magnificent area.
